Running a one-person business does not always require a full accounting suite. Intuit is betting that some owners would rather start with the basics and a $0 monthly bill.

The company has introduced QuickBooks Free, a no-subscription accounting plan aimed at solopreneurs and very small businesses. It includes income and expense tracking, one connected banking institution, invoicing, receipt capture, mileage tracking, and three financial reports.

Unlike QuickBooks Online’s 30-day trial, QuickBooks Free does not require a credit card, but its monthly usage caps make it better suited to businesses with relatively light bookkeeping needs.

QuickBooks Free covers the bookkeeping basics

According to Intuit’s QuickBooks Free guide, the plan lets users connect to one bank account, send up to two invoices and one estimate each month, manually upload two receipts, manage one 1099 contractor, run three core reports, and track up to five business trips per month.

The three included reports are the profit and loss, the balance sheet, and the quick account report. QuickBooks Free can also import transactions from a connected bank account and help separate business and personal transactions.

Feature
QuickBooks Free allowance
What to know
Connected banking institutions 1 Best suited to businesses using a single primary account
Invoices Up to 2 per month Could be limiting for freelancers with several clients
Estimates 1 per month Intended for light quoting activity
Receipt uploads 2 per month Frequent business expenses may exceed the cap quickly
Mileage tracking 5 trips per month Better suited to occasional business travel
Core financial reports 3 Includes profit and loss, balance sheet, and account quick report
1099 contractors 1 Limited for businesses working with multiple contractors
Users 1 No accountant or bookkeeper access

The limits give a clearer picture of who QuickBooks Free is designed for. A freelancer with only a few clients may be able to stay within the plan’s monthly allowances, while someone sending several invoices or logging receipts every week could outgrow it much sooner.

The $0 plan comes with limits beyond transaction volume

QuickBooks Free supports one user, and Intuit’s guidance states that users cannot invite an accountant or bookkeeper to the account. The plan also does not include Intuit Intelligence.

For a solo business, some of the limits are likely to become noticeable as activity increases:

  • Outside bookkeeping: An accountant or bookkeeper cannot be added as another user.
  • Client volume: The plan allows up to two invoices per month.
  • Expense tracking: Users can manually upload two receipts and track five business trips per month.

The monthly caps can become an issue before a business hires employees. A freelancer or contractor working with several clients, for example, could exceed the invoice or receipt limits while still operating alone.

Intuit points users who need more room toward paid QuickBooks plans. The company says QuickBooks Lite adds unlimited invoices, receipt capture, and mileage tracking, along with support for more contractors and automated sales tax tracking. Businesses with broader accounting requirements can consider Simple Start.

Before upgrading, freelancers who have outgrown those limits may also want to compare QuickBooks alternatives for solopreneurs with different pricing and accounting features.

Who should consider QuickBooks Free?

Intuit positions QuickBooks Free for solopreneurs, freelancers, independent contractors, side hustlers, new LLCs, and service-based businesses with no employees. For those users, the main question is whether their normal monthly activity fits within the plan’s limits.

A new freelancer who sends one or two invoices, keeps a small number of receipts, and handles bookkeeping alone may be able to use the plan without paying a monthly subscription. Someone already managing several clients, frequent expenses, or an outside bookkeeper will likely need more room.

For businesses already bumping up against those limits, broader small-business accounting software can offer more room for additional users, reporting, and day-to-day bookkeeping needs.

QuickBooks Free gives Intuit a $0 entry point for users who do not yet need a full accounting subscription. For solo businesses that fit within its limits, it covers core bookkeeping tasks without a monthly software bill. Users who outgrow those limits can move to a paid QuickBooks plan without migrating their existing QuickBooks data to another platform.
