Mt. Gox has pushed back its creditor repayment deadline by another year to Oct. 31, 2027, after receiving court approval to give creditors more time to complete the procedures required to receive their funds.

Summary

  • Mt. Gox has postponed its creditor repayment deadline from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027, after receiving court approval.
  • Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said many creditors remain unpaid because of incomplete procedures and issues encountered during repayment processing.
  • Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment have largely been completed for eligible creditors who fulfilled the requirements without issues.
  • Mt. Gox has repeatedly delayed repayments since 2023, although distributions through exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp began in July 2024.

According to an Oct. 16 notice from rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, the deadline was moved from Oct. 31, 2026, because many creditors have yet to receive their repayments due to incomplete procedures or problems encountered during the distribution process.

The trustee said Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment have largely been completed for creditors who submitted the required information and encountered no issues.

However, a considerable number of creditors remain unpaid, including those who have completed the necessary steps but experienced problems during processing.

The court-approved extension gives the rehabilitation trustee another 12 months to continue distributions where repayment remains reasonably practicable.

Mt. Gox repayment deadline moves to October 2027

Under the revised schedule, Oct. 31, 2027, is the new repayment deadline in Japan Standard Time.

The notice did not introduce a new repayment category or announce changes to the amounts creditors are entitled to receive. Its focus was on outstanding payments under the existing rehabilitation process.

Kobayashi explained that some creditors had not completed the procedures necessary to receive their funds, while others had encountered difficulties during the repayment process.

The trustee described completing repayments for these creditors as desirable to the extent reasonably practicable.

Mt. Gox has been distributing funds through a rehabilitation process that allows eligible creditors to receive payments under different repayment arrangements.

Base Repayment forms part of the rehabilitation framework, while Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment are separate arrangements available under the plan.

The October announcement did not provide an updated count of unpaid creditors or specify the amount of Bitcoin and other assets remaining to be distributed.

It did not provide a timetable for individual payments within the new deadline.

Creditors seeking information about their claims were directed to the online rehabilitation claims system, where they can submit inquiries through the frequently asked questions section.

The trustee said creditors could use a separate inquiry form without logging in, although identity verification could become difficult in those cases.

Due to the volume of requests, the rehabilitation team warned that responses to creditor inquiries might be delayed.

Mt. Gox creditors have faced repeated repayment delays

Mt. Gox has postponed its repayment deadline several times since the original October 2023 target, as the rehabilitation process has continued beyond its earlier completion dates.

In October 2025, the trustee postponed creditor repayments again, moving the deadline from Oct. 31, 2025, to Oct. 31, 2026.

As crypto.news previously reported, the 2025 announcement stated that approximately 19,500 creditors had received payments, while others remained unpaid because of incomplete procedures or processing difficulties.

A similar repayment deadline postponement occurred in October 2024, when the trustee moved the completion date from October 2024 to October 2025.

The repeated delays followed the collapse of Mt. Gox in 2014, when the Tokyo-based exchange filed for bankruptcy after losing approximately 850,000 BTC.

At its peak, Mt. Gox handled roughly 70% of global Bitcoin trading volume before withdrawal problems and missing funds forced the platform to shut down.

The exchange subsequently entered civil rehabilitation proceedings, with creditors seeking compensation for assets that had been inaccessible for years.

Japan’s court-approved rehabilitation process eventually allowed distributions to begin, including payments in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

Repayments began in July 2024 through designated cryptocurrency exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp.

Kraken confirmed receiving creditor funds on July 16, 2024, after Mt. Gox transferred substantial amounts of Bitcoin to addresses associated with its distribution arrangements.

The exchange subsequently began crediting eligible users, ending a wait of more than a decade for some claimants.

Mt. Gox transferred funds to several custodians during the distribution process, including BitGo, which received Bitcoin as part of the repayment arrangements.

Bitcoin holdings remain under rehabilitation trustee control

Despite the earlier distributions, Mt. Gox continued to hold substantial Bitcoin reserves in 2026.

On June 2, the exchange transferred 10,422 BTC worth approximately $739 million, according to blockchain data cited by Arkham Intelligence.

The transaction involved a transfer of 10,306 BTC from cold storage to an unmarked address, while the purpose of the movement remained unclear at the time.

Mt. Gox still held more than 34,500 BTC at the time of the June report, with the rehabilitation process continuing under the previous October 2026 deadline.

The June figures are historical and do not establish the trustee’s remaining Bitcoin balance as of October 2026.

The Oct. 16 announcement did not disclose a new wallet balance, confirm further Bitcoin transfers or identify any exchange scheduled to receive another distribution.

Creditors can continue submitting repayment-related inquiries through the rehabilitation claims system, although the trustee has warned that the volume of inquiries may affect response times.
